(work in progress) Cans (Lean on each other) / よりそう缶
I started going grocery shopping at a nearby Tesco after coming to London. You can notice that many immigrants are working at night. Restocking the sold items neatly onto the shelves for the daytime is the role they are allocated. Seeing the shelves pristinely stocked gives me the impression that nothing happened during the day. Very similar things are happening outside supermarkets, especially in central cities such as Tokyo, where I come from. A lot of people live in flats that are standardised, with the same number of rooms and the same colour of walls. People move in and move out constantly before you even notice. Then other people arrive with their luggage. Filling in a blank space is one of the natures cities have, and I am one of those taking part in that role seriously.
I started this project inspired by the idea of Genpei Akasegawa’s Canned Universe. The dull light of the cans reflecting off one another symbolises the countless human beings who perceive thier own identity through the differences from others. Besaides, stacked cans are also a metaphor for contemporary society where people rely on and support each other. A can without a label becomes something uncertain, an object of fear or danger, because we cannot know what is insde. In this sense, it represents a complicated society in which it is difficult, or where people do not even try, to know other’s backgrounds or conditions. At the same time, something murmurs inside the cans. Viewers must come close to listen to it. This simple action becomes the first step to imagine, or to begin to know, the experiences of the worker behind the scenes.
留学のために渡英してから、学校帰りに近所のTESCOというスーパーマーケットで買い物をするようになった。夜になると、移民と思われる店員が店内で多く見られるようになる。昼間に売れた品物を几帳面に棚に補充していくことが彼、彼女たちに与えられた役割だ。品物が所狭しと並んでいる棚を眺めていると、昼間の出来事がまるで何も起こっていなかったように見えてくる。似たようなことがスーパーマーケットの外、特に都市部では起こっている。多くの人がマンションやアパートメントの画一化された住居で生活を送り、いつの間にかいなくなっていたりする。そして、空いた住居には新しい住人がどこからともなく、荷物を持ってきて住み始める。ぽっかりと空いた穴を常に埋め続けるのが都市の性質の一つで、都市に住んでいる私もその与えられた役割を真面目に果たしている人間の一人だ。
このプロジェクトでは赤瀬川源平の『宇宙の缶詰』における考え方を反映させた上で制作している。缶がそれぞれ反射し合う鈍い光は他者との差異を通して、自我を認識する無数の人間の象徴である。また、重なり合い支え合っている缶は無数の人々が協力して成立している社会をも象徴する。ラベルが貼られていない缶は中身を知ることができないが故に、怖さや危険を伴った存在となる。つまり、社会が複雑化し様々な人々の背景を見ようとしない、あるいは見えているのだが、視界に入らないようにしていることを指す。一方で缶の中からは何かを話す音がする。鑑賞者が音を聴こうとし、缶に近づくという行為は、普段は気にもしない人たちのことを知ろうとする第一歩となるのではないだろうか。
