Marine Debris - Tsushima

In September 2024, I visited Tsushima Island to create a new piece during a two-week stay. The Tsushima Art Fantasia artist residency program, active from 2011 to 2021, is currently on hold following the COVID-19 pandemic (though I am not certain of the exact reason). So, I decided to make this journey on my own as a sort of “self-directed artist in residence.”
Tsushima Island lies between the Tsushima Strait and the Korea Strait and is part of Nagasaki Prefecture (as shown on the map on the next page). Due to its strategic location, it historically served as a fortress in several wars.
Today, however, Tsushima Island faces a different challenge, as billions of pieces of ocean debris, primarily from Japan, Korea, and China, are carried here by the Tsushima warm current and seasonal winds. For this project, I chose ocean debris as my motif.
2024年の9月、作品を制作するために対馬に2週間滞在した。対馬アートファンタジアというアーティストインレジデンスがコロナを挟んで2011年から2021年まで続いていたのだけれど、理由も分からないのだが、それも中止になってしまっていた。機会があれば対島アートファンタジアに参加したかったのだが、叶わなかったため、セルフアーティストインレジデンスと称して、テントでの滞在生活が始まった。
対馬は対馬海峡と朝鮮海峡の間に位置しており、その特徴的な地理から、いくつかの戦争においては砦としての役割を果たしてきた。
しかし、今日において対馬は戦争ではないのだが、対馬暖流と季節風により日本、韓国そして中国からの多くのゴミが漂着する、という異なった問題を抱えている。今回のプロジェクトでは、この漂流ゴミをモチーフとして扱ってみることにした。
